Chapter Five

Back in reality, Ian decided to put his plans into action. After the long weekend with Kiya, he understood that now he had one of two options. He either had to give her up and take his father’s mantle or he needed to cut ties. He dropped her off at her school on Monday morning with a long, drawn out kiss. It was a miracle they even made it at all after the snow but, while he would’ve loved another night with her, he knew her students needed her too.

Ian made his way towards his father’s mansion because there were things that was needed to be said. He walked past his father’s guard with a stiff nod.

“Been looking for you all weekend long,” the guard commented. “No one at your place or nothing.”

“Since I never signed up for a nanny, where I was is no concern to anyone,” Ian replied as he kept moving.

This was one of the men he didn’t like, true to his father and all things in the Mordha legacy. He walked inside and slammed the door behind him. There was no laughter, no parties, it was too early. Ian went to the breakfast room and noticed since his last visit over a week ago, his mother had come back home. It seemed her spa vacation was cut short.

His mother beamed at him. Her hair was dyed an obnoxious red to hide the gray and she was wearing a low cut top that someone thirty years younger should be wearing. A big chunky gold necklace with earrings and bracelets to match finished her look, and while his father approved with perverted caresses up his mother’s arms, Ian wanted to gag on the smell of her perfume as he got closer.

“My baby boy.” She hugged him and when she kissed him he knew she left a layer of her thick red lipstick on his cheek.

“Mom,” he said. “I thought you were going to be...away for a few weeks.”

“Marla got sick,” she pouted. “You know that old girl can’t keep up with me at points.”

Ian wanted to tell his mother that her friend Marla usually went along with her crazy schemes. Maybe she should probably stop trying to get the poor woman into trouble neither of them needed.

“We don’t usually see you this early, son.” His father gave him a shrewd look. “We needed you this weekend, you were gone. The Russians took two of our truck deliveries off the interstate before the drivers could get to the warehouses.”

“I had plans of my own,” Ian said.

His father slammed his hand on the table. “You have no plans when I need you. Your only plan is to benefit my life.”

“Collin, the boy has a life...” His mother quelled under his father’s withering stare.

“You don’t need to speak for me, Mom,” Ian said casually. “Collin really thinks he has control over my life.”

“I am your father,” his father seethed.

“Well, Dad, I’m here to tell you that I’m leaving this fun family dysfunction.
